Choice
values were assigned by adhering to the
following conventions:

Energy,
protein, fat, carbohydrate, dietary
fibre determined to 1 decimal place.

Dietary
Fiber subtracted from carbohydrate

Assigned
choice values reflect composition of the
food
-
1.5-3.4
grams of fat = ½ fat choice
-
2.5- 5
grams carbohydrate = ½ fruit and
vegetable choice
-
Less
than 2.5 grams carbohydrate = an extra
choice
Due to
variation in glycemic response in mixed
meals the diabetic choice values should be
used as a guide in conjunction with
capillary blood glucose monitoring.
Total carbohydrate figures are acceptable
for carbohydrate counting.
